Newfoundland and Labrador - March 2010
Provincial Budget Presente
The provincial government is pinning its hopes on oil being at least $83 per barrel for at least the next twelve months. Oil is now, by far, the single largest source of revenue for Newfoundland and Labrador. Offshore royalties will account for more than $2.1-billion in revenue for the next fiscal year. The largest expense for the government is health care, accounting for about 35 cents of every dollar.
Budget 2010 amounts to $7-billion in spending with some of the measures including new dialysis units for Port aux Basques and Labrador West, a new primary care facility for the northern section of the Burin Peninsula, an addictions treatment unit in Harbour Grace, a long-term care facility in Carbonear, a new high school for the west end of St.John's and a replacement for Virginia Park Elementary, $14-million extra for school maintenance and repair, an extra $250-thousand for library maintenance and repair, 500 more student housing units in St.John's and 200 in Corner Brook, a continued freeze in tuition fees, a cap on class size from K-9, coverage for insulin pumps to be expanded to include those ages 18-25, four new water bombers to fight forest fires and six new ferries.
