Purpose

To ensure that every Ontario resident living with diabetes has access to available device technologies and treatments, and the benefits associated with these devices and treatments.

To ensure that the choice of appropriate device technologies and treatments to be used by Ontario residents affected with diabetes is not unduly influenced by restrictions in coverage by private health care insurance policies. This Partnership believes that the physician in consultation with the patient should determine the choice of treatment.

To ensure that the device technologies and treatments covered should include, but not be restricted to:

  • Insulin pumps
  • Insulin pump cartridges and/or reservoirs
  • Insulin pump batteries
  • Insulin pump infusion sets
  • Alcohol swabs, skin prep, tegaderm or equivalent skin dressings
  • Blood glucose meter - where no other coverage is available
  • Blood Ketone sticks
  • Testing devices not listed deemed necessary
  • Glucagon emergency kit
  • The quantity of syringes deemed necessary by the patient's physician and any costs associated with disposing of sharps such as these syringes
  • Insulin pens - where no other coverage is available
  • Insulin - where no other coverage is available
